*The Short Stories*
This semester I feel like I have grown a lot in my reading. I have definitely read a lot more than I usually have(, but that's probably because we were forced to). That's okay though! I still enjoyed it! Annotating has also become much easier for me since we have learned the different literary elements. I also am concentrating more when I am reading. I'm not sure why, but its nice.
In the spring semester, I hope to continue reading a lot of different books. Maybe I can try to read a type of book that I have never read before, or maybe read 15 books by the end of the year. I feel like that is a very reasonable goal.

Mood in Lord of the Flies
In the book I am tracking the mood. In the very beginning of this book the mood was sort of happy. They were using happy colors to describe the island and the kids almost seemed exciting about being away from their parents! That lasted about a day or so. Then panic sets in! They realize that they are on a deserted island with limited resources. They are just kids. They need a plan. The mood begins to become very stressed. You feel that if you could help them you would but you just cant! You want them to succeed.
On a smaller level, you begin to feel sort of sorry for Piggy. The group continues to throw out his ideas and make him seem like the weakest link. They wont even let him go explore with him. That contributes some sadness to the mood.

Semester Recap
This semester I have really improved in annotating. I learned that there are actual elements of writing that you can annotate for. It might take a while to actually do these annotations but at least they have become easier for me to do. Social Setting is my favorite thing to annotate for. I like looking at how the different characters interact with each other and how their relationships can change. I also like annotating for psychological setting (mood) because if you you understand how the book wants you to feel, then it becomes much easier to connect with the characters.
Blogging is something new to me. I had never done it before this year and I think that its a really cool skill to have! It lets you poor your thoughts out for other people to see which is really awesome. Sometimes its hard to keep up with them, but I mostly manage to get them done. I really enjoy blogging, but sometimes its hard to find the time to. Maybe when I get older i'll be able to keep up with an actual blog!
One thing we might need to review are all of the literary elements. I have most of them down, but I get some of them mixed up.

reading responce
Right now I am reading World War Z by Max Brooks. It is a collection of individual accounts of a zombie war told in first person. Now I know what you are thinking...why in the world are you reading a zombie book. The answer is simple really! My favorite TV show is the walking dead. Now if you've never seen the walking dead, it basically follows a group of people in a Zombie Apocalypse as they try to stay alive. It's probably the best show i've ever seen in my life.
Anyways, back to the book. One of the reasons I like this book is because it is a collection of individual stories. If you don't know what I mean by that, think of story core. Remember in 7th grade how we saw the different stories all mashed into one subject. Its like that! Except its one scientist recording all of these peoples stories. It takes you threw the first outbreak, attacks, individual struggles, and (even though I haven't gotten to it yet) defeating the zombies. Its a really good book. You should read it, and if you like it watch the walking dead!

This Quarter
This quarter in English, I feel like I have grown a lot. Annotating has gotten much easier for me and that's good!! That was always my biggest struggle. I always came to class with my supplies except for I few times that I did not have my free reading book. I admit to getting off topic a few times, but I always managed to reel myself back in. I really enjoyed the group work with my classmates and the group discussions.
There were a few times this quarter where I did not turn in an assignment or did not put for all of my effort. I tried to keep this to a minimum because last year that got really out of hand. I feel like next quarter I will do very well in this class because I understand how the class works now.

Beastly Plot
I recently read the book Beastly by Alex Flinn. The plot of the story revolves around a character named Kyle. I personally love the way that the plot progresses in this story. At first the book introduces the main character in the book as someone you would usually hate. That rude jock who thinks that they're everything. Then as the book progresses it turns him into someone you can relate to, someone you can admire.
The rising action makes you feel as if Kyle is getting what he deserves. He has been turned into a hideous monster. The person he was on the inside
The climax of the book is when you realize a girl has actually fallen in love with him. It was actually possible. He was free.

Im a Writer Who...
I am a writer who can never find anything to write about. No matter what is going on or how much I relate to the topic, I can never find that one thing that really makes me think, "Wow! That's a great topic. I should write about that!" This is something that I have never really been able to conquer. I just wish that one day my head would fill up with a million things that I could write about whenever I wanted to. Almost like an endless bank of topics! Wouldn't you want that? To be able to sit down and find a topic to write to for hours and never run out of new ideas?
I dont think that I would ever dread writing ever again!! Not that I absolutely hate writing...I just always end up running into that brick wall that seems impenetrable. I'm sure everyone has experienced this at least once. That moment when your mind goes blank, your hand goes limp, and all hope of ever writing another word are completely obliterated. You're stuck. You're confused. You're lost. If only I could make it so that that would never happen again....

My Service Expierence
Last Saturday, I had the oppertunity to go on a very eye opening service trip. I went to the food pantry in Scottlandville. It was the best thing ive done in a while! What we had to do was carry food to elderly and disabled peoples cars because they were not able to. It was hard work...but not at first!! I thought "hey this isnt that bad! All I have to do is carry watermelons and milk jugs to some cars! I can do this!" The work became increasingly more difficult as the sun rose higher in the sky. But I realized that I didnt care! I didnt care that it was a million degrees outside..or that I felt that these watermelons kept getting bigger and bigger. It didnt matter to me. I was helping people. People that were underpriveledged and not able to carry a few watermelons and milk jugs to there cars. It was a small gesture but they appriciated it.
Right when you shut that car door and told them goodbye you would here a faint "god bless you" or "have a blessed day" and that made my day go from 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds. Its so easy to brighten someones day. I have so much respect for them and I cannot wait to go back again.

Literacy Narrative "Reading Responce"
This week i spent a lot of time on my Literacy Narrative. This may have been the hardest paper Ive had to write in quite a long time. The thing that gave me the most trouble was taking my one idea and stretching it out into a 3 page paper. This always seems to be a problem for me. I will end up staring at blank computer screen for 3 or so hours. Writing papers is something that i always struggle with. I probably always will, but the important thing is to put my best effort forth and see if there are ways that i can improve.
My paper is about how reading paces affect how much you enjoy a book. This stance is something that I have always thought. Ever since summer reading was first introduced to me, I have always had issues in finding a pace that i am comfortable reading at. I always feel to rushed or if I have a lot of time then I have a tendency to procrastinate. This is an issue that I need to figure out how to fix.

Hunger Games Reading Response
This week i decided to wait until the very last minute to do all of my reading. I spent all day reading The Hunger Games. In case you haven't read it or seen the movie, which I'm sure you have, here's a quick recap.
Katnis (the main character), lives in a world with 13 districts. Once a year there is an event held called The Hunger Games. This is an event where 1 girl and 1 boy are chosen from each district to compete in a battle to the death an an arena that changes climate and setting each year.
This book was very interesting to read because the author made the plot progress in a very natural and smooth way. What I mean by that is the fact that the other never forced things on you, you always knew "oh this is about to be suspenseful" or "here's when this will finally happen!". That made my reading experience very enjoyable and allowed me to be able to finish this book quite quickly.
I would recommend this book to everyone who has not yet read it. I promise you that you will never get bored. I for one cannot wait to begin the next book in this amazing series.

My Literacy Narrative
For my Literacy Narrative, I am writing about something that i think we can all agree on. Its about last year when we read To Kill A Mockingbird. We literally read that book at a speed of one page per hour...reading a book that slowly made me completely despise the book in every way.
The first night I thought it was great! That is because I read it at my own pace, then whenever I said to stop and wait to continue to read until the next night...that's what killed me. I hated having to stop from chapter to chapter because because I would always forget what happened in that chapter whenever we had to pick up when we left off in the book.
My story will include different examples of how reading at different paces affects how much I enjoy the book, and how I have learned to deal with having to read slowly.

The Vampire Diaries
Have you ever seen the show "The Vampire Diaries"? If you have. You can understand how i became absolutely obsessed...
For those who haven't it is about a girl who falls in love with two vampire brothers from the 1860s. She is truely in love with only one of them, but she doesnt figure that out until the very end.
Anyways, this week i read the books! I was absolutely thrilled as i was reading to see that it is just as exciting as the show. The story is told from two points of views, Elena Gilbert and Stephen Salvatore. I love the way that the book switches back and forth between charactors. It really lets you see how they both are feeling throughout the course of the story. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves action and a good love story. I for one cannot get enough of this series.
9/4-45 min., 9/5-37 min., 9/6-50 min., 9/7-75 min.
Total 207 min., pp. 1-320.

Comment Responce
In responce to Charles (rainbowdash)'s comment on my "In Defense of Instagram; A Previous Facebook Addict's Manifesto" blog.
"An interesting, although rather sadly misinformed piece of writing. Facebook has more than 150 million users, far outstripping Instagram. In addition, Facebook has recently purchased Instagram, so it doesn't matter anyway. Facebook features are really not all that difficult, anybody with a little sense and some time on their hands could figure it out. Its all opinionated, I'm simply stating that you're statement of "Facebook is dead" is completely and utterly wrong. Please, make sure you have accurate information before you start making bold statements as such. *Note-I am not trying to call you "stupid", I am merely pointing out that this is highly opinionated and not all correct."
This comment literally left me oozing with rage...hitting my head against my desk does not begin to relieve my endless amount of anger this comment has just infused me with, Facebook is dead...there is no doubt about it. INFACT, the one and only reason that facebook bought instagram IS BECAUSE instagram became so popular; it became a threat to facebook.
Facebook launched in 2004. Originally called "thefacebook", Facebook gained 8 million users in its first year. Instagram has gained over 80 million users since it was released in October of 2010. That is the same amount of time, but if you noticed, Instagram is growing much faster than facebook did.
This graph instagram and facebook and how they have grown. Again, notice how much faster instagram has been growing, as opposed to facebook, which yes, I agree has more users than facebook now, but that is only because it has it has been around since 2004. It has six years on instagram. There is no doubt that Instagram will demolish facebook in its rise to conquering this social media frenzie that we all seem to be caught up in.
Facebook may not be dead yet....but it will be...just wait.

The Daughters -due sept 4
During the epic hurricane Isaac, I picked up a free read that I
very much enjoyed. I read The Daughters by Joanna Philbin. Maybe you recognize
the last name Philbin? Regis Philbin, of Regis and Kelly, is her father. Hold
onto this, it will be important.
The book follows a girl named Lizzie who lives with her parents in New York. Her mother used to be a super model, but now has her own fashion line that is in a bunch of stores. Her father is a New York Times columnist.
This book was wonderful. I have always wondered what the brangelina kids feel like have cameras following them everywhere just because their parents are famous. Or maybe little Suri Cruise during this whole Holmes cruise divorce thing. How does she feel?
Lizzie is in this situation, along with 2 of her friends who are also daughters of the rich and famous.
The book also explores her feelings on trying to discover herself in a world full of cameras. The book is written in third person omniscient, meaning you can "hear" Lizzie's thoughts and no one else's but you get a narrator to kind of "check" her story. Here is an example: The whole book she is convinced she is ugly, because she is comparing herself to her mother. The narrator fights this by telling you she is just "non traditional looking."
I think this book is just one huge reflection on the authors childhood. She is the daughter of someone famous, but yet no one has really heard of her. Maybe she is just touching on her experiences and exaggerating them, or maybe she is writing about her experiences and just doesn't want to admit it sucked do much. Who knows...
I read this whole book on Wednesday during the hurricane because I literally had nothing else to do. It took about 3 and half hours spread throughout the day. I discovered bad weather and a lack of electricity provided good reading time.
The Daughters 8/29- 220 minutes, pp. 1-275

Hurricane Issac...in some ways...I thank you...in other ways...not so much. You blessed Episcopal with not one, not two, but FOUR days off of school. I cant really say that I did anything amazing or interesting this week, mostly because im still grounded, which I have previously talked about. I did however have a relaxing afternoon spent in a room/attic connected to my room at my new house that we moved into about 4 weeks ago. The house has a tin roof which, as you can imagine, sounds absolutely incredible during a hurricane. It was so peaceful I decided to read a book that i found, The Daughters, by Joanna Philbin.
As I had my eyes glued to this spectacular book, the rain fell continously making an indistinguishable pitter patter on my roof. To my surprise, this sound is pleasant and peaceful. As my eyes glided from left to right on the page, time seemed to move even slower than on my worse days. I have learned to love hurricanes and the water the indirectly nourishes all things it pours down on. (for the less poetic audiences, I mean myself)

Readers Responce: Beastly
The book I am reading right now is called Beastly by Alex Flinn. I am sure you have probably seen the movie derived from this story but if not, here is a quick recap.
Kyle is the most popular kid at his school. Mostly because he was good looking...because the reason definitely was not his personality. Kyle is your typical jerk. So one day a witch put a spell on him to turn him into the "beast" he was was and so on. The only way to reverse the curse is for someone to fall in love with him.
This book is really good so far and it really makes me think. If i was being a huge jerk to everyone, I would want someone to tell me. Usually if im doing something wrong i will try my hardest to fix that something, but i cant if I am totally in the dark!!
I think everyone should read this book. Its a real eye opener.

Facebook is dead. Instagram has officially taken over. Some people are very confused about his because it is quite obvious that Facebook has twice as many features as Instagram does. The thing is, people don't know that those features on Facebook exist, therefore...no one cares about them. The only thing people really use Facebook for anymore is to post pictures that they can tag their friends in. That is exactly what Instagram is. Its like one big photo album where people can like your photos!!
Now i know what you're thinking...what about Facebook statuses? Twitter takes care of that, but that is a whole different conversation.
I encourage everyone to make an Instagram if you haven't already. Quit staring at your computer screen and pick up your phone and buy the app. It will be worth your time.

To Tell the Truth...or Not to Tell The Truth....That is The Question
Hey guys. So for my first free post I thought I would begin with something all teenagers can relate to, how much being grounded sucks. We all think "hey, one or two weeks....no big deal", but when you are facing a semester of nothing but staring at a wall with no contact with the outside world except for school...you begin to think. Were my actions really worth it? If I could do it all over again, would I? That is a question that I will be exploring for the next 18 weeks.
As I ask myself these questions right at this very moments my answers are simple. Yes to both. Not that I enjoy deceiving my parents at all, but this experience has taught me a lot. It has taught me always to be truthful, even if speaking the truth feels like coughing up nails, its still important to tell the truth. Take it from the girl who will be working the hardest she has ever had to earn her trust back after she took to it with a sledge hammer...ALWAYS tell the truth.

Readers Response: If I Stay
This summer I read If I Stay by Gayle Forman. So you know what I am talking about, here is what happened in the book:
Mia and her family were in a car accident. Mia was the only one who survived the car accident and therefore went into a coma. Mia begins to watch her body as she is in a coma. She can see and hear everything that is going on around her, but no one knows.
From this book I learned that life is short and we all need to spend time with those who love us most. This can also apply to the teenage frame of mind or acronym "YOLO" because this phrase allows people to do what they really want, because they do not know when they will die.
I liked the idea that Mia could hear and see things while she was in a coma, but I did not like how the author made the beginning of this book very slow. I would recomend this book to everyone who can handle the tragedy of a car accident.
